A (Very Late) Pitchfork Recap

Some three weeks after the excellent music festival ended, I’ve compiled a list of bands to check out based on my three days in Chicago’s Union Park. Luckily, good music is timeless.

If you like: Big, dumb garage rock, complete with shouted titles and Ramones-esque buzzsawing

Check out: Jay Reatard (or, as I always preface it in my head, the unfortunately named Jay Reatard

If you like: Mellow guitar runs and beautiful multi-part harmonies, a la the Dead or CSN

Check out: The Fleet Foxes

If you like: The folk band that plays at the wedding during every movie set in Europe

Check out: Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar

If you like: Saucy Brits grooving about class conflict and how they’re going to seduce your girlfriend

Check out: Jarvis Cocker

If you like: Bruce Springsteen, but wish he only wrote songs about teenagers with drinking problems

Check out: The Hold Steady

If you like: Amp-exploding Japanese heavy metal

Check out: Boris

If you like: Cheerful 60s good-time keyboard grooves

Check out: The Apples in Stereo

If you like: Screaming Jay Hawkins theatrics, complete with ten-piece band, on-stage cheerleader and cape

Check out: King Khan and the Shrines

If you like: Paul Simon’s Graceland

Check out: The Occidental Brothers Dance Band International (although they would probably dislike this comparison, viewing it as inauthentic)

If you like: Roots guitar sounds seemingly sucked out of a 1940s radio

Check out: M. Ward

If you like: Rocking orchestral manifestos, complete with choir-voiced back-up singers

Check out: Spiritualized
